Cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), more commonly known as stroke, is prevalent with over 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK alone. The effects of a stroke depend on which artery in the brain was blocked or bleeding, but can involve visual and cognitive difficulties. The consequences of stroke can often last a lifetime, and survivors can experience psycho-social and emotional difficulties. On the other hand, survivors can experience post-traumatic growth. These concepts will be explored in this session, as well as the cardiovascular system and pathophysiology of stroke. The session will hosted by Psychology Senior Lecturer Leanne Rowlands, and she will be joined by Nicola, who suffered a stroke due to an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) at the age of 24.
